| Madvillain is MF DOOM & Madlib |
When a 'new' track by Madvillain is leaked on to the internet, the whole internet goes ape shit. It has been at least seven years since the release of the critically acclaimed 'Madvillainy', which has been cited as one of the best hip hop albums in who knows how long.
Over the summer, Adult Swim, had included a Madvillain track titled 'Papermill' in their Singles Project, and two days into 2011, Stone Throw Records leaked two new tracks in their latest podcast, Avalanche and Victory Lap.
I was not thrilled about the the upcoming Madvillain full-length when 'Papermill' was released, it just didn't sound like anything MF DOOM or Madlib has done with their solo projects or in 'Madvillainy'. 'Papermill' was out there and didn't seem to make much sense music wise.
However with the recent two new tracks, I am pumped for 'Madvilliany 2'. The podcast opens up with 'Avalanche', with MF DOOM "thanking" his "sponsers" and rhyming it with "frankenstein monster" . Sound wise, it definitely the unmistakable aesthetics that MF DOOM and Madlib are know for creating, the creepy, avant-garde, hip hop sound that most rappers and artists of the genre would steer away from. I really enjoyed 'Victory Lap' sounds differently than 'Avalanche', with a much more quicker and aggressive tempo, and probably more "mainstream".
The combined length of the two tracks combined is a measly 1:49, which is typical for Madvillian tracks, which are short, quick and do not go past 3 minutes. These two tracks are excellent and sheds some light on what may come from the project.
Verdict: 8/10
